Overview
Epoch’s ChatGPT usage explorer describes the recorded histories of 5,000 US YouGov panelists, from December 2022 to December 2025. YouGov selected these panelists randomly from a subset of their regular panel who used ChatGPT at some point in 2026 and who opted to share their ChatGPT histories with YouGov. The sample is unweighted and is not representative of US adults or ChatGPT users overall.
To protect panelists’ privacy, YouGov replaced every message with its word and character count before sending the data to Epoch. Epoch never saw any message text, publishes only aggregate statistics, and does not redistribute the raw data.
This documentation describes where the data comes from, how each metric is defined, and what the downloadable files contain. The raw data is not for redistribution. The data is available on our website as a visualization, and for download as an Excel workbook or as long-format CSV files.
Incomplete 2026 periods are available through the “Show incomplete data” setting in the data explorer and are included in the downloads. If you would like to ask any questions about the data or request a subgroup to be added, feel free to contact us at data@epoch.ai.
